New Tuition Centre, Durga Nagar, Kolkata

OHFI works in areas that do not receive support from other charities/NGOs, or from the government. One such area is the Durga Nagar community in the Kolkata slums. Durga Nagar has approximately 100 houses with around 500 occupants. This work is run by Lun Misao, his wife Ngaiching, and his team of six social workers and teachers.

OHFI works in areas that do not receive support from other charities/NGOs, or from the government. One such area is the Durga Nagar community in the Kolkata slums Durga Nagar has approximately 100 houses with around 500 occupants. There is a real desire in the community to provide a better future for the children. They are extremely appreciative of the Social Work home visits and support packages that Lun provided through the pandemic, thanks to OHFI supporters. During this time, Lun and the team have built strong relationships, and have the trust of the community, meaning that people are willing to open up about their troubles and their dreams for the children, and to receive advice and guidance.

The community asked that OHFI set up a tuition centre similar to the one in neighbouring Dum Dum. With few resources and no funding, we started teaching the children of Durgar Nagar on the street. Fortunately, we have recently found a large enough room to hire. The children’s eagerness to learn is wonderful. We are working hard to get support, so we can rent the space to establish a permanent Tuition center in Durga Nagar.
